'For us to take part in polls, Deuba should become PM'

In a new twist to mind-boggling political developments, a UDMF leader indicated on Friday they will take part in local level elections if CPN-Maoist Centre Chair Prachanda resigns as prime minister and hands over power to Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba.

Rajkishor Yadav, chair of the MJF (Republican), a partner in the United Democratic Madheshi Front, told Onlinekhabar: Prachandaji has failed to deliver, so if he wants to make way for local elections, he should step down and hand over power to Sher Bahadur Deubaji. Let’s bring CPN-Maoist Centre, (RPP President) Kamal Thapa and MJF (Democratic) Chair Bijaya Gachchhadarji on board, amend the Constitution and go for elections. Yadav claimed that such a government can muster two-third majority in the Parliament, required for the passage of the Constitution Amendment Bill.

Yadav pointed that things would have been easier if Prachanda, after coming to power, had been able to bring Kamal Thapa and Bijaya Gachchhadar on board. He said: But Prachanda did not bother to hold talks with Kamal Thapa. At this juncture, there’s no possibility of Kamal Thapa and Gachchhadar joining the government under the leadership of Prachanda. So, there’s no alternative to installing a government under Sher Bahadur (Deuba), amending the Constitution and going for elections.

He said: It will be great if the main opposition CPN-UML joins the new government. Forming an all-party government will be even better. But even if the UML does not come on board, a government including Thapa and Gachchhadar will be able to secure a two-third majority in the House, which is required for the passage of the amendment proposal. Passage of the Constitution amendment proposal will create an enabling environment in which UDMF can take part in polls, Yadav said, adding: Otherwise, in the given context, UDMF has no option but to launch a movement.

Yadav added: So, Prachanda should quit the government, a government that can muster two-third majority in the House should be formed, the Constitution should be amended without delay and environment conducive for conducting elections created.
