Ahead of the new climbing season, meet Nepal’s eight-thousanders

In the West, whenever there’s talk of Nepal, people think about the Himalayas and the snow. For many, Nepal has become synonymous with the Himalayas. Saudi economy returns to growth on back of oil price rises

DUBAI, June 5, 2018 (AFP) - The Saudi economy pulled out of recession in the first quarter of 2018 thanks to oil price rises, a think-tank said Tuesday. Capital Economics said the oil-dependent Saudi economy grew by 1.5 percent in the first quarter, after having contracted by 0.7 percent in 2017. "The oil sector was the main driver of the recovery," the London-based group said. Oil prices surged to around $80 a barrel last month from under $30 a barrel in early 2016 after OPEC and non-OPEC producers struck a deal to cut output. As a result of the crash in prices, the economy dipped into negative territory last year for the first time since 2009, a year after the global financial crisis. The OPEC kingpin has posted a budget deficit in the past four years, and it has borrowed from domestic and international markets and hiked fuel and power prices to finance the shortfall. UN envoy 'very concerned' by fight for key Yemen port

SANAA (AFP) - The UN envoy for Yemen said Tuesday he was "very concerned" over fighting for the rebel-held port of Hodeida, as government forces close in on the main gateway for aid into the war-torn country. "Apart from the avoidable humanitarian consequences of such a battle, I am also very concerned about the impact (on) chances of a political settlement of this conflict," Martin Griffiths told reporters in the capital Sanaa. Griffiths on Tuesday wrapped up a three-day visit aimed at brokering negotiations between Saudi-backed loyalist forces and Huthi rebels. The envoy, appointed to the post in February, told reporters at Sanaa airport that the talks had been "positive" but warned of the impact of the Hodeida fight on civilians. US sets September 1 date for start of N. Korea travel ban

WASHINGTON, Aug 2, 2017 (AFP) - The United States on Wednesday officially set a September 1 start date for a ban prohibiting its citizens from traveling to North Korea. "The Department of State has determined that the serious risk to United States nationals of arrest and long-term detention represents imminent danger to the physical safety of United States nationals traveling to and within the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK)," read the restriction as it appeared Wednesday in the US government's Federal Register. "All United States passports are declared invalid for travel to, in, or through the DPRK unless specially validated for such travel," it added. An exemption was noted for approved humanitarian travel and for journalists in some circumstances.
